Kapok - Is it really unsafe?

Kapok. We have all heard of this material one time or another; may this have been good or bad, but how true are some of these broad accusations of this product?

Let's look at the most common "issues" mentioned when it comes to this material:

Number one: "Kapok is very dusty"

There are many issues to unpack with this broad statement but I will try my best to make this as brief as possible. As hamster owners we have all come in contact with certain products. One of these being paper based bedding.

As someone with very sensitive allergies I am not kidding when I say I have opened bags of kaytee that have made it so hard for me to breathe that I had to wear a face mask...

Most owners have used things like Kaytee Clean and Cozy and Carefresh in some point. Now you might have had luck when getting your bag of bedding or your allergies aren't as easily triggered as mine but 9 times out of 10 you have gotten dust in your bag of bedding; and most of the time these bedding are so filled with dust particles when cleaning your cage there is small collections of powder at the bottom of your enclosure.

Now we don't deem *unscented* paper based beddings unsafe, nor do we tell people not to use them due to the dust that can be present in these products so why do the same to kapok when you run the risk on the daily using Kaytee and Carefresh.

Number two: "It is water resistant"

I personally find these comment specifically so amusing as people seem to think this makes something unsafe. Quoting one of these posts on "The Dangers of Kapok" : "The kapok fibers have a natural waxy coat as the fibers are meant to protect the seeds inside the pod, this waxy coat prevents moisture getting into the seeds. This causes a lot of serious problems were your hamster to ingest it"

As human being it is safe to say you have had contact with at least ONE fruit or vegetable in your life (and if you haven't... uhm are you okay?). Simple things like lettuce, broccoli, the outside of a bell pepper (which are all safe for hamsters to consume) also have this "wax coating" which is why you don't see people using things like spinach as a paper towel.

This permits water to slide off with ease when cleaning and disinfecting fruits and veg and for them not to become soggy; so I guess we come back to the same question: Why is fresh food not deemed unsafe but kapok is?

Number three: "It is not digestible"

It takes one very quick google search to discover what kapok is made of. The 2 main compounds inside kapok are; Lignin (a woody plant substance) and cellulose (a carbohydrate); both of these items can be found in hamster safe foods such as such as strawberries (lignin), pumpkin seeds (cellulose) and many other fruits, vegetables and nuts. These can all be fully digested by hamsters which would mean it could be digested if consumed.

But let's ignore this information. In the case it was indigestible this doesn't automatically mean it will stay in the body forever. A great example is corn in humans which is technically indigestible for the human body but it doesn't stay in the digestion track. It just exits one way or another.

Number four: "It has tasty seeds which will make my hamster eat it"

This statement is both very funny and very sad in my eyes, not only is it implying hamsters can't tell the difference between seeds and a bedding but is also a very weak argument. Hamsters are very smart creatures which have been shown to be able to learn tricks, lean to communicate with their owners and are very smart foragers so it would be safe to assume they can distinguish these two materials.

It is very easy to tell this statement is hypocritical like with all the others I have mentioned. Most of us scatter feed, hide food in bedding and some owners feed on dishes yet none of that is deemed unsafe as hamsters are foragers and are able to find the food and distinguish these 2 elements but when it comes to kapok all of this suddenly doesn't apply?

Number five: "Blockages"

This argument is normally the following statement after the last two comments. There are 2 factors that would come into a hamster getting a blockage; consumption & the amount consumed.

Here I would like to note that kapok is meant to be a nesting material and would never be consumed in large enough quantities (in one go) for it to cause a serious blockage, we also go back to the same point in "issue" number one of this material being called unsafe yet using others that can pose the same harm such as toilet paper and bedding.

Number six: "Limb entanglement"

This is a very valid concern as sadly this material is compared to things like cotton fluff (which does pose this risk) and the reality is kapok is composed of very light, thin, easy to break fibers which would make it almost impossible for it to actually happen.

Number seven: "It is the same as cotton fluff"

Once again a common concern held by owners due to the spread of misinformation on kapok. Kapok and cotton nesting do share a few aspects in common; they are both sold in pet stores and they are both considered nesting material but their similarities end there.

Cotton nesting material is normally synthetic, made of long hard strands and is over all unnatural for hamsters; while kapok is the complete opposite! Kapok is natural, digestible made of thin strands which are easy to break apart posing no risks to hamsters.

What are the actual risks of kapok?

In my eyes the only possible issue is dust which can easily be sifted out if desired leaving really no issues for kapok to be frowned upon and should be more encouraged as it is natural and will help recreate a natural environment for your small pet.

It is sadly very easy to fall into the trap of misinformation and I even thought this material was unsafe when I first started owning hamsters but the reality is those dear posts calling this material unsafe can be easily debunked with a few google searches and are based on hypocrisy and double standards.

There is NO proof to this day showing this material can actually be unsafe and cause any harm when is purchased from a high quality retailer yet there is a lot of proof that shows it is safe, which side you chose to believe is your choice like anything else.

The information is out there, it is just a matter for looking for the ones based on actual proof instead of speculation as misinformation is very easy to find and fall in to.
